Kerawalapitiya Interchange (Transit Terminal & Entrance/Exit Terminal)

The Kerawalapitiya Interchange is Consists of Transit Toll Terminal (Kerawalapitiya I) and an Exit/Entrance Toll Terminal (Kerawalapitiya II).


All vehicles which do not exit from the Kerawalapitiya Entrance/Exit Terminal (Kerawalapitiya II), should transit via the Kerawalapitiya Transit Terminal (Kerawalapitiya I) and payments should be made for the all vehicles which come from southern and outer circular expressways.


Since here only possess a transit, the charges between the Kerawalapitiya Transit Terminal (Kerawalapitiya I) and other interchanges are low than to the charges between Kerawalapitiya Entrance/Exit Terminal (Kerawalapitiya II) and other interchanges.


Moreover, the Kerawalapitiya Entrance/Exit Terminal (Kerawalapitiya II) is a general interchange which provide the Entrance & Exit facility.


As well as the toll charges are calculated considering the Entrance Charge (Fixed Charge) and distance charge (Variable Charge).


Actual Toll Charge = Entrance charge (Fixed Charge) + Distance Charge (Variable Charge)


Due to entrance charge is not applicable for transit toll terminals, toll charges are calculated only considering the distance charge.


Therefore toll charges form transits toll terminals is lower than toll charges from normal interchanges for the same distance.

Is it required to introduce congestion charges for Sri Lankan Expressways ?

The undue traffic congestions that have been taken place along Main & Secondary Highways, Sub urban road networks experience severe congestion during peak hours (morning, afternoon & evening). Today the congestion is causing unbearable delays, excessive emissions of gasses along with increasing of user costs.


Current status has revealed that most of vehicles which are normally utilizing the national highways during peak hours have selected the expressway network to save their journey time.


Tolling systems currently available in the expressway network in operation are as follows.

E-01 : Southern Expressway : Manual Toll collection (MTC)
E-02 : Outer circular Highway : Manual Toll collection (MTC)
E-03 : Colombo-Katunayake Expressway : MTC & Electronic Toll Collection (ETC)

Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC) - Colombo-Katunayake Expressway

Electronic toll collection (ETC) aims to eliminate the delay on expressway by collecting user fee electronically. ETC determines whether the cars passing are enrolled in the program, electronically debits the accounts of registered car owners and open gates automatically without requiring them to stop.


The payment of the user fee of Colombo-Katunayake Expressway(E03) now can be done electronically using the new Electronic Toll Collection System called "ETC".


This facility is available only in Colombo-Katunayake Expressway(E03).
